Hey y’all!!!
My previous post showcased how I used hand lettering in the organization of my laundry room. There was a last minute addition that I added to the space that used hand lettering as a somewhat focal point in the room. The space on the wall behind my dryer essentials was kinda blank and I felt “something” needed to be put there. I thought long and hard about the “something” and decided I should use some of my crafty stash and hand lettering of course, so add that little “something.” In comes the “wash,” “dry,” “fold,” lettering in picture frames.
This project was SUPER cheap. I mean, I only spent $3 plus tax on the picture frames to complete the project. Every other supply used came from my stash of crafty supplies. If you have a stash of crafty supplies, I highly recommend using them in projects around your home. I have started using scrapbook paper A LOT lately. I use it in my planner, clearly my home decor and I’m trying to think of other ways to use it – but I really like using it as a backdrop in picture frames!!!
In this post, I’m going to share step-by-step instructions on how I turned inexpensive photo frames from the Dollar Tree into beautiful hand lettered wall decor.
Step 1: Purchase your picture frames. Now, this step is important because it needs to go with your decors and you want to ensure that whatever size frame you purchase, you have enough paper to cover the background of the frame. I went with these 3.5″ x 5″ frames because I felt that they would go really well with the brush bronze hardware in the laundry room.
Step 2: Go through your stash!!! This was the fun part as well as hard part. I LOVE paper, so it was kinda hard to determine which paper I wanted to use. I selected three thinking that I would do a different paper for each frame, but you’ll see that I decide against that. You could even use embellishments!!! Die cuts, wash, stickers or whatever you have. It all depends on your style and the “look” you want your space to have.
Step 3: Take out the backing of the picture frame and use it to draw guidelines on the paper you chose. This will allow ease of cutting the paper to the exact size to fit the frame. Make sure you cut a sheet of paper for each frame you’re hanging.
Step 4: Depending on what type of pen you are using to letter, you need to choose the right type of paper. If you’ve read any of my earlier posts, you know that there are only certain types of paper you should use when lettering with most brush pens. I used Tombow Dual Brush Pens, so I ensured that the paper I was using to letter on had a smooth surface; therefore, I used Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper.
Step 5: Determine the size you want your lettering to be and cut the paper. I think I used 2.5″ by 5″. I cut out three strips, one for each frame. You also want to ensure that what you’re lettering will fit on the strip of paper you’re using.
Step 6: Add your adhesive to the back of the paper you are lettering on and adhere to the top of your scrapbook paper.
Step 7: Letter away! I lettered “wash,” “dry,” and “fold!”
Step 8: Put your lettered creation in the frame and hang them on the wall or stand them up!
I hope this post gave you some inspiration to use hand lettering in your home to practice your lettering as well as gave you the opportunity to use some of your crafty stash!!!
Happy Lettering!!!
xoxo
