Hey y’all!!! I hope you’re noticing a theme so far in my blog posts – practical ways to practice your lettering and a little inspiration or treating yourself while doing so. If you’re anything like me, you struggle finding the time to practice your lettering. You work full-time, you have children to raise or quite simply – life happens. With all of us leading such busy lives, there’s no wonder we have a hard time lettering daily. In one of my first blog posts I think I shared that I started lettering after a brief obsession with decorating my planner. Don’t get me wrong, I love a pretty planner but after a couple of month my planning become extremely functional – not decorating at all, just planning out dates, meetings, events, etc.
One of the things I like about the planners that I use is accountability and the most important facet – the creation of lists! Lists. Lists. Lists. To-Do Lists, grocery lists, task lists, the list literally goes on and on. One thing that I have started doing in 2018 is lettering out my lists. Of course with this, you need to ensure that you are using paper that won’t destroy your pens, but other than that there’s nothing else to it. Just letter your to-do list or grocery list instead of writing in your normal handwriting.
I thought of this accountability tip – you get how I’m trying to make this extremely technical – LOL!!! One of my good friends had Christmas party at her home the week before the actual holiday. My friend Terry is by far one of the best hostesses. From wine glass identifiers (I don’t know what the technical term is) to favors, she really ensures that her guests enjoy their time at any event she hosts.
Well, during my down-time at work during the holiday (there was literally only two of us at work the days leading up to Christmas) I decided that in 2018 I would host a cocktail party at my home. Now, full disclosure here. I actually have a Master’s Degree in planning – not event planning, but Urban and Regional Planning. Most people have never heard of this discipline, so I’ll explain it real quick. Urban and Regional planning is the backbone of all cities, towns, states, etc. it focuses on what goes where and when in an area. It looks and what it and what should be. The type of growth and development is desired in an area. They type of businesses, houses, the height of the buildings and all of that. In essence, you go from point A to point Z with a plan. Needless to say, my brain has been trained to think this way so when I decided that I was going to host a party in 2018 I immediately drew up plans – guest list, menu, logistics, etc.
The first list was the guest list. Who did I want to invite and was there anyone that I didn’t want in my home? LOL!!! That may seem a little harsh, but it’s important. There may be some people who you’re cool with, but you don’t want them to know where you live.
Then came the menu (which I’m still working on BTW). I knew that I wanted to do some form of a cocktail party and every time I saw pics of a cocktail party of scenes from a movie or television show, there is always a cheese tray. So, instead of just saying I want a cheese tray I did a little Pinterest research and decided what kind of cheese I wanted to serve, what kind of fruit goes well with those cheese, the pairing crackers/breads, etc. This may for a more extensive list which allow me to letter a little bit more!
I hope this post not only helps you plan your next party, but most importantly allows you to practice your lettering. You may not be planning party this year, but I’m certain you’ll need a grocery list, a to-do list or some kind of list that will allow you to practice your lettering.
Happy Lettering!
Xoxo,
Robyn
