Hey there!
This is my first blog post and I wanted to share something really – real with you (I’m not even sure if that’s grammatically correct). What I want to share with you is the fact that…hand lettering takes A LOT of practice!!! When I first started lettering in August of 2016, I would send pics of my lettering to my family and friends and they all said “OMG! How did you do that? Did you write that? That looks AWESOME!” To be honest with you, I hadn’t looked back at my first attempt at lettering until after I set up this website. I looked back and I thought “OMG!!! This looks AWFUL!!!” Well…in all actuality, it wasn’t awful, it was just…ummmm…my first attempt at doing something new to me. Take a look at my lettering from August 19, 2016 (pictured below).
As months went on and I made it my business to get better at lettering, I started lettering daily…well…almost daily…which didn’t always mean daily. LOL! I actually got better with time and deliberate practice. Take a look at my work from October 2016. It’s still not great (says the one who has been lettering for months) to me today…but you couldn’t tell me nothing in October 2016 (picture below)!!!
It still wasn’t GREAT lettering to me. I knew I still had work to do. I began following hand lettering artists on IG and signed up for a few blogs and got a lot of freebies!!! Drills, alphabets, etc…I started noticing one thing…practice made these hand letterers better!!! That was one of the things that made their work stand out!!! In February 2017 (check out the pic below), I really made it my business to start investing in the right tools. After all, every artist needs the proper tools to master their art right?!?! Yes. They. Do!!! I starting purchasing the right paper and brush pens needed to make my work look better.
Fast forward to May 2017 and I’m still getting…well…better at lettering. I’m lettering daily…well…almost daily…or when I can find the time.
Honestly, practice makes better!!! Like most things in life, the more you do it, the better you get. So…although I don’t consider myself an expect, I’m definitely better than I was when I started in August 2016!!! That is the key, when you make the decision to get better at lettering you’ll find yourself lettering in meetings, while your in the waiting room somewhere…sometimes I find myself lettering in the air while standing in line in Hobby Lobby…LOL (funny…not really…because I actually do that)!!!! Just keep practicing and you’ll get to where you want to be with your lettering!!!
xoxo,
Robyn

Sooooo proud of you! Honestly, your story could be my story. I’m not brave enough to showcase 99% of what I do yet. I only have a few posts on IG. But I definitely see an improvement in the lettering I did a year ago. Again, I’m so proud of you for taking that step to start a blog and I encourage you to keep growing! 💟💟

phianettThank you so much!!! I understand completely!! I looked at my first hand lettered attempt and thought twice about sharing it, but I thought it would help others who are starting out on their hand lettering journey to see that there is room to get better. Thank you again for your support and kind words 🙂
