Happy New Year!!!
This year has started off extremely busy for me, as I’m sure it did been for you! Welcome back to Pearlfectly Lettered! I am so excited that you were able to take some time out of your day to read my little blog post.
A couple of months ago I posed a question in a Facebook group I’m a member of about lettering. The question was something like: what would they like to learn about lettering? The responses ranged from how to not give up to how to do flourishes. So, my first blog post of 2019 is going to focus on “how to NOT give up?” This post is so to the point and plain and simple that I don’t have any pics to go along with it!!! I really wanted to take the time and be real with y’all.
So…I will be honest with you and tell you that learning to letter is HARD. It takes time, dedication and practice!!! A LOT of PRACTICE!!! I’ve been lettering for two years now and I still try to practice every day. Some days are harder than others because let’s face it – we are busy people. And in the busy-ness of life, it can be very difficult to find the time to do something like letter. It can be frustrating while learning and so instead of giving you the normal “just practice daily” speech, I’m going to be very honest with and give you one tip. That tip is to link lettering with something that you LOVE.
Let me explain what I mean by this. I am a very visual person. I like things to be pretty – notepads, pens, pencil cases…the list goes on and on. When I look at something and it’s pretty to me, I am more apt to pick it up, use it, and do whatever needs to be done. It’s no different with lettering for me.
Lettering is pretty to me, but I always take it a step further when it comes my love of it! I carry my pens in pretty pencil cases, I letter Bible scriptures daily, I organize with lettering, etc.
So….let’s say you like cooking. I would start off by lettering my recipes. Maybe start with lettering the name of the recipe and create a recipe book, box, etc. and showcase your lettering. Not only will you be practicing your lettering, you will also have the prettiest recipe book/binder/box EVER!
Here’s another example. Let’s say you like Bible Journaling (something I started doing last year and totally fell off…eek)!!! There are many different tools and techniques Bible journalers use and lettering is definitely one of them. I believe that every Bible journal entry I have has lettering incorporated in some way. If you are a Bible journaler and you want to start lettering or keep lettering and you just can’t figure out how to keep it going – start using lettering as a technique in your Bible journaling.
Okay…last example. Honestly, it’s not one that I really identify with; but I know it will hit home with some of you. Let’s say you like sports!!! You go girl!!! Good for you!!! I would start by lettering my favorite team names, favorite players names’ or even start with lettering the schedule. It’s just a cute way to link lettering with something that you LOVE!!!
The list could literally go on and on. To put it plainly, try to use lettering in aspects or parts of your life that you love. It will inspire you to letter more often, which almost ensures that you won’t give up!
Happy Lettering!
