Hey pretty girl! Welcome back to the blog! In our fast-paced world, self-care has become an essential practice for maintaining not just our physical health, but also our mental well-being. An often-overlooked aspect of self-care is personal style. The way we choose to present ourselves to the world can significantly impact how we feel on the inside. In this post, we will explore the interconnection between style and mental well-being, along with practical tips for achieving a harmonious balance.
THE IMPACT OF PERSONAL STYLE ON MENTAL HEALTH
Your appearance is a reflection of your inner self. Dressing in a way that makes you feel confident can boost your mood and enhance your overall sense of well-being. When we take the time to curate our wardrobe, we are essentially investing in ourselves. Whether it’s the comfort of a cozy sweater or the confidence that comes from a tailored outfit, these choices can uplift our spirits.
Research has shown that what we wear can influence our mood and even our decision-making processes. For instance, wearing bright colors may evoke feelings of positivity, while more muted tones can evoke a sense of calm. The key is to discover what resonates with you personally.
EMBRACING INDIVIDUALITY
Self-care through style is all about embracing your individuality. It’s essential to define your personal aesthetic—not just what’s trending, but what truly reflects who you are. Take the time to explore different styles, colors, and fabrics that make you feel most authentic. Curating a wardrobe that speaks to your personality will not only make getting dressed an enjoyable process but also a form of self-expression.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been drawn to classic style. When I got my first summer job at the tender age of 14, I wanted to use all of my earnings on clothes and shoes. When I was in high school in the mid-to-late 90’s, the trend was baggy jeans, and oversized clothing. Although this was what most girls were wearing back then, I always opted for jeans, a fitted top and loafer or heel and I never cared that others were dressing differently than me. Style is such a personal thing and that’s a key that we should always remember. Your style is yours; and just because you aren’t wearing the latest trends or you can’t afford designer labels – do you and stand ten toes down doing so!
MINDFUL DRESSING
Incorporating mindfulness into your dressing routine can significantly enhance your self-care practices. Before choosing an outfit, take a moment to check in with your mood. What do you feel like wearing today? Are you in need of something playful or perhaps a touch more sophisticated? Listening to your inner dialogue can lead to more thoughtful choices and a greater sense of well-being.
BUILDING A CAPSULE WARDROBE
For those seeking to simplify their wardrobe and reduce decision fatigue, consider creating a capsule wardrobe. This approach involves selecting a limited number of versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits. Not only does this streamline your daily routine, but it also allows you to invest in quality pieces that you truly love—further enhancing your style and comfort.
I have been creating capsule wardrobes and style boards consistently this year (I know it’s only March LOL) and I LOVE it! I think creating a monthly capsule or even a seasonal capsule wardrobe makes getting dressed easier. For me, it also makes it easy to hone in my shopping by focusing on the gaps that exist when I lay out the inspiration of how I want to dress for that month and/or season. If you struggle with putting outfits together, over spending or you feel like you don’t wear the clothes you own – try putting together a monthly or seasonal capsule wardrobe with those key pieces that inspire you or make you feel your absolute best.
SELF-CARE BEYOND CLOTHING
While personal style plays a crucial role in self-care, it’s important to remember that mental well-being encompasses various aspects of our lives. Engaging in activities that promote relaxation and happiness—such as yoga, journaling, or enjoying nature—should also be part of your self-care regimen. Try allocating dedicated time each week for these practices, alongside dressing up and expressing your style.
As a single girl, I always try to ensure that I am doing those little things that put me in the right head space. I get a massage twice a month, regular mani-pedis, and I also try to have a spa day at least twice a year. These are forms of self-care that work for me. I am also not opposed to having a cleaning lady come in and clean my home when I am simply overwhelmed by life. Self-care comes in so many forms. Don’t pigeon hole yourself into the form that is “the norm” if it doesn’t work for you and your lifestyle. For you, it may be taking a walk in the park, shopping, going to the beach to hear the waves or going to a museum. Whatever self-care is for you, do that and do it as often as you can!
Balancing style and mental well-being is a beautiful journey of self-discovery and care. By investing in your personal style and listening to your inner voice, you can foster a sense of confidence and authenticity that enhances your overall quality of life. Remember, self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Embrace your individuality, and let your style illuminate your well-being.
