Hey pretty girl! Welcome back to the blog! Fall and winter are my absolute favorite seasons because I get to wear some of my favorite clothing pieces – coats! I am a northern girl at heart so I am no stranger to the true purpose of outerwear – to keep warm. Since I decided to attend college in the south eastern United States, wearing a coat to keep warm is not as pressing down here as it is up north. That being said, it’s still important that I have outerwear pieces that are appropriate for mild winters and sometimes a more brutal winter because I still have family up north and I would love to travel up north or the northwest during the winter months.
The thing about living in south with mild winters is that there are time where it gets cold, but the number of days where the weather calls for wool, full-length outerwear are very minimal. Because of this, I am very strategic about the amount of money I spend on those specific pieces because it would be a frivolous spend and I don’t have money to waste like I’m sure you don’t. In today’s post I am going to share five must have outerwear pieces and splurge or wish list piece in each of the categories.
CLASSIC WOOL COAT
Like I stated before, I live in the south eastern United States where the cold days aren’t many. This doesn’t mean that I don’t need a wool coat, it just means that I haven’t invested much money in a wool coat. I have had black this wool coat by Kenneth Cole for years! Literally 16 years and it is still in good shape. I love the shape and length of it. Down here, I don’t really have a need for a full length coat that would go to my ankles, so this coat is the perfect length to keep me warm when the weather calls for a heavy coat. If you are looking for a new wool or wool blend coat check out this one by Kenneth Cole.
Because of my hourglass figure, I think that the best coat is one that shows off my curves. I’ve had this burgundy colored wool coat by Guess for about ten years or so and it keeps me very warm. I love the skirted hem and the military button style. It’s a coat that I get compliments on every time I wear it. The bold burgundy shade is an unexpected pop of color which makes the gold button pop! The bell sleeves also makes it the perfect coat to wear with sweater with puffy sleeves and makes it easy to wear gloves or mittens on those really cold days. If you’re looking for a chic burgundy coat check out this one by Calvin Klein or this one by Maralyn & Me.
Sleek PUFFER JACKET/COAT
I’ve owned a down and/or puffer coat since I’ve been in high school. In those days, I don’t recall a lot of long options so a lot of my classmates were wearing bomber style puffer coats/jackets. It wasn’t until I actually bought this Bernardo puffer coat earlier this year for a trip to New York that I realized how warm these coats are! Not only is this coat stylish, it features a hood, lined pickets and it zips all the way up! Puffer coats have come a long way! They make belted versions, they come in a ton of colors to fit all wardrobes and they come in so many lengths which suite any climate. I highly recommend the Bernardo brand. If you’re looking for a quality, puffer coat check out this one and this one from Bernardo.
CHIC TRENCH COAT
Y’all know how much I love a good trench coat! I have had this traditional trench coat by J. Crew for about five years and I absolutely love it! It can make even the most casual of outfits look very chic. This year, I bought this cropped track trench jacket from Anthropologie to update my wardrobe. I thought it was very different for my classic style, yet very appropriate for fall and mild winters.
I also have this black skirted trench coat by Kenneth Cole that I’ve have for about 16 years or so and I love it! I always get compliments when I wear it. It looks so good with dresses and skirts. I think the skirt style makes it the perfect option when I want to wear a dress or skirt and I opt to wear a trench style coat.
If you are looking for a trench coat, try this pleated one, this traditional style with a removable hood or this cropped style.
FAUX FUR COAT/JACKET
There are so many faux fur options on the market now you can almost get one from anywhere. I don’t attend events where this style of coat makes sense in my wardrobe, but if I did, here are a few that I would consider. I did try this faux fur jacket from Walmart on last month and it was extremely warm! I highly recommend it if you are looking for faux fur on a budget. You can also check out this one by Mango, this one by EDIKTED or this one by Cotton On.
A faux fur coat/jacket would make a great addition to your winter wardrobe. They are chic and classy and they keep you extremely warm!
PEA COAT
Pea coats were all the rave when I was in high school and college. I got this gray pea coat by Express for Christmas my freshman year of college so well over 20 years and it has held up very well! I don’t get that much wear out of it, but it is one that I plan on wearing more often this season. If you’re looking for a pea coat, check out this one by Anne Klein.
